about

During the lockdowns of 2020-2021, I spent much of my time writing and producing this short ambient/atmospheric album called 'Different Connections'.

For the most part, the album was created at my previous studio - Coach House Studio in Bristol. This was where, years before I took custody of the sacred space, Massive Attack and Portishead recorded Blue Lines and Dummy, respectively. When that studio was swept away by the latest wave of Bristol's unrelenting tide of gentrification, I salvaged much of the interior of the historical space and used it to build a new studio beneath my house in Bristol. This is where I made the final touches to 'Different Connections'.

Central to the sound of 'Different Connections' is a core collection of 'analogue' instruments - some old and some less old: the softly-spoken upright Kemble piano previously owned by my grandfather and 'lost' to the great Gloucestershire floods of 2007 (or so the insurance company think), an early-20th centrury harmonium named 'Betty' which I bought from an Aardman animator, and a Moog synthesiser processed through a unique selection of effects units. I chose to craft this album mainly alone, finding a desierable escapism in the exploration of new sounds, however occasional input from collaborators offers an additional layer atop these swirling soundscapes - one example being the delightful playing of Canadian woodwind maestro Stef Haynes on Granular Sightings.

I hope this album finds some new ears to soothe out in the big scary world.
